I have delayed posting a new owl count for quite some time as I was trying to send out positive vibes and honestly I was so busy working on the issue that it was pushed aside. But unfortunately, I have not observed any owls since Jan 14th on the Kiper Homes' Blue Ridge development in Antioch, CA. With my observations extending well over a year, it is quite disheartening to see this parcel of land transform from a booming owl community to a mere ghost town.

Although these owls may be gone, the work to preserve this magnificent species will continue throughout the East Bay and at the State level. Continue to monitor this JournOwl for the latest information on a push to change Fish and Game eviction policies that are contributing to owl population declines. A Burrowing Owl Omen

Have you taken your virtual Peru and South American birding tour yet? If not, hop on over to A Birding Blog by Gunnar Engblom. There you will find an incredible array of pictures, information, and all things birding. And it was at this site that I was introduced to and came across a photo of the Marvelous Spatuletail.

The Marvelous Spatuletail is endemic to Peru and only found in remote forest edged areas of the north. The males have incredible tails with the outstanding feature being two long feathers that end with broad discs. The feathers can be moved independently and are used in attracting females. Its preferred food-plant is the red-flowered lily, but it has been observed feeding on at least five species of flowering plant.

The IUCN has listed this as an endangered species as a result of a decreasing population trend due to deforestation and poaching.
